The :HELM fishing reel is designed to be mounted on the pushpit at the transom of the vessel. Suitable pipe diameters range from 22 to 30 mm for secure attachment. Additionally, the reel can be mounted on a flat surface using a standard M8 bolt (not included with the product). Ensure that the chosen mounting location provides easy access for operation and maintenance, and verify that the surface or pushpit is sturdy enough to handle the forces during fishing activities.
To ensure a better experience, it is recommended to align the :HELM with the center axis of the vessel. There are two variants available for purchase:
Straight variant – no angle offset
Angled variant – 10-degree offset

STEP 1
Before mounting, attach the fairlead to the reel. It can be installed in either of two positions, depending on whether the reel is intended for left- or right-hand use.
Once the preferred position is selected, secure the fairlead using the 4 countersunk M6 bolts. Use an Allen Key to tighten the bolts to a torque of 4Nm. Then, gently wiggle the fairlead and re-tighten the bolts to 8Nm.
Verify that the fairlead is securely attached. If necessary, repeat the tightening process to ensure proper attachment.
STEP 2
Mount the reel in your preferred location on the transom, ensuring there is adequate space for adjusting the drag and engaging or disengaging the autocatch.
It is recommended that two people handle the mounting — best practice is to point the :HELM straight up and mount the M8 U-bolts, nylon washers, and hex nuts. Use a wrench with a 13mm size, tighten only until the reel is staying leveled, excessive force will bend the holder.
DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN
The horizontal leveling impacts if your reel mostly spools the line in the center or spreads it out. Depending if you sail in coastal or offshore a different adjustment may be better.
- 03
To safely handle the :HELM fishing reel, keep a stable posture and plant your feet firmly on a secure surface to avoid slipping. Use gloves when handling heavy catches to prevent line cuts or abrasions.
- 04
The :HELM reel must be mounted to a sufficient fixture on your sailboat. Verify all attachments are tightened and stable before use.
Don't use the reel if it is loosely attached or if the mounting hardware shows signs of wear or damage.
- 05
Children should only use the reel under adult supervision. Ensure they understand the proper handling and safety measures.
Demonstrate safe practices before allowing others to use the reel, especially first-time users.
- 06
To maintain the :HELM fishing reel, clean and dry it after each use to prevent corrosion and maintain smooth operation. For longer storage of the reel, add a protective and breathable cover to shield it from dust, moisture, and sun damage.
- 07
To perform basic operations with the :HELM fishing reel, start by releasing the line with a controlled counterclockwise turn of the Drag Knob. Manually pull out the first meter of line to let the lure enter the water. The natural drag will release more line as the boat moves. Once the lure is at the desired distance, tighten the Drag Knob clockwise to secure the line. For retrieval, disengage the AutoDrag slider and turn the Drag Knob clockwise to increase drag force. Use the furling mechanism to smoothly pull in the lure or catch.
- 08
The :HELM fishing reel boasts advanced features to enhance your offshore fishing experience while sailing. One key feature is the Autodrag system. To use it, slide the Autodrag Slider forward to engage, which gradually increases the drag force up to 15kg with each reel rotation. Remember to disengage Autodrag before using the furler system to avoid counteracting effects.
- 09
Rinse the reel with fresh water after every use to remove salt and debris. Use a soft cloth to dry it thoroughly.
Periodically check all moving parts for smooth operation. Apply a light lubricant to the reel mechanism as needed.
Clean the line guides to ensure they remain free of obstructions that could cause uneven line movement.
- 10
Regularly inspect the mounting system and fasteners of the :HELM fishing reel to ensure they are secure and free from corrosion. Replace the line if it shows signs of wear like fraying or nicks. Periodically check the drag system to ensure it functions correctly and provides consistent resistance.
- 11
Before storing the reel for an extended period, ensure all components are clean and dry.
Apply a protective coating to metal parts to prevent rust.
Store the reel in a dry, cool location away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
